Did you know that there is an International Standard for Auditing Management Systems? Many who attend any CQI & IRCA Certified Management System Auditor Training Course in any discipline will be familiar with ISO 19011 – Guidelines for Auditing Management Systems.
In July 2018, ISO published ISO 19011:2018 – an updated revision replacing the 2011 revision – providing more Auditing guidance given recent big updates to widely adopted International Standards like ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management), ISO 13485 (Medical Devices Quality Management) & others.
One of the biggest changes has been the focus on the application of Risk-based Thinking to the audit process, given “there is now an enhanced focus on risk in both management standards and in the marketplace (source: ISO.org)”. Other notable changes are additional guidance is now provided on auditing risks & opportunities, managing an audit program, and conducting an audit compared to the 2011 revision.
Whether you are conducting internal or external audits, ISO 19011:2018 provides invaluable best practice guidelines and a benchmark for all types of Auditors globally. One of the major benefits of International Standards is that they can provide any organization with guidance and best practices that are widely adopted globally which can only enhance the organization & people that adopt them and provide more confidence & assurance to all parties regarding their approach to Auditing or Management Systems.
